Clark, Doggett named IG Wealth Management Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters
Burlington, Ont. – April Clark and Slater Doggett have been named IG Wealth Management Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters, for the period ending January 13, 2019.
Female Athlete of the Week – April Clark (St. Mary’s, Ont.) – 4th Year – Western Mustangs
To say that April Clark is clutch is an understatement, as the fourth-year forward has been lighting the lamp all season long for her Mustangs women’s hockey team. Her name has been atop the OUA scoring racing for some time now, and this past weekend, she added even more separation from the pack with an outstanding stretch on the ice.
Her torrid weekend began with a goal-scoring spree against the Laurentian Voyageurs – a game that Western won 6-0 – wherein she tallied a natural hat trick before the game was even 25 minutes old. The St. Mary’s, Ont. native followed that up with another big-time performance against Nipissing, providing the tying goal against the strong Lakers squad early in the third period before her team managed the go-ahead goal late to capture the 2-0 weekend.
With four goals this weekend, Clark now has 17 goals and 23 points on the year. Both marks good enough for top spot in the conference, which also ranking her first in goals in all of Canada and just two back of the U SPORTS points leader.
Male Athlete of the Week – Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) – 4th Year – Queen’s Gaels
Thanks to a five-point weekend for the Queen’s men’s hockey team and helping his Gaels move into second place in the East Division, Slater Doggett has earned this week’s provincial recognition.
On Friday night at Laurentian, Doggett scored just 2:50 into the game to put the Gaels in front. He added a pair of assists including one on the power play in the 4-2 victory over the Voyageurs. The following night at Nipissing, the Gaels leading scorer was at it again. This time he tied the game up late in the second and scored his second of the game to put Queen's ahead in the third en route to a 4-1 win.
Doggett, who now has 15 goals and 22 points on the season, also jumped ahead of teammate Spencer Abraham into 10th place on the Gaels all-time scoring list with 112 points overall.
