Fay, Winder named IG Wealth Management Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters
Burlington, Ont. – Mary Fay and Todd Winder have been named IG Wealth Management Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters, for the period ending February 18, 2019.
Female Athlete of the Week – Mary Fay (Chester, N.S.) – 2nd Year – Queen’s Gaels
Queen’s curling skip Mary Fay was one of the standouts at this weekend’s OUA championships, leading her team to a gold medal after five days of tough competition at the KW Granite Club.
Fay was named a first-team OUA all-star for her efforts at the championship in Waterloo and it’s not hard to see why. The Gaels finished out the round-robin atop Pool B with a 6-1 record, which included wins in four straight draws to start their round robin play. Queen's then took down Carleton 7-2 in the quarterfinal and snuck out a close victory over Lakehead, 4-3, to earn a spot in the gold medal match. Queen's once again held a close match, taking the banner with a 6-4 win over Laurentian.
Fay was able to throw the final stone and seal the Gaels first OUA banner in women's curling since 1994.
Male Athlete of the Week – Todd Winder (Uxbridge, Ont.) – 2nd Year – Guelph Gryphons
By his high standards, Guelph’s Todd Winder had a relatively quiet regular season. But the reigning OUA West Rookie of the Year has a penchant for producing when the stakes are highest, which he proved once again in the Gryphons opening round games against rival Windsor.
The former member of the OJHL’s Newmarket Hurricanes lifted Guelph on home ice last Thursday night, scoring twice in the second period to help erase an early 2-0 deficit. Winder grabbed an assist on a late, third-period equalizer and then capped an already-special night in style. The score was tied 4-4 midway through the extra session and moments after attempting a spin move on Lancers’ goalie Jonathan Reinhart, Winder saw a loose puck near the crease and poked it in for his third of the night in a thrilling Game 1 win.
The teams met two days later in Windsor and Winder, who scored five times in three games in their 2018 OUA West quarterfinal series, again notched the decisive goal, this time just 21 seconds into the first period. He added an assist for another multi-point effort in a 4-0 victory that put the team into the OUA West semifinals. The two-game span brought Winder’s career playoff stats up to a shocking 10 goals and six assists in just seven games played, adding to his growing legacy as a clutch playoff performer.
