MALE: Ross Proudfoot (Sudbury, Ont.) – 5th yr. – Guelph Gryphons – Cross-Country
In the final race of his decorated OUA/CIS cross-country career, Guelph Gryphons runner Ross Proudfoot found himself atop the individual podium at the CIS Cross-Country Championships for the first time with a 10-kilometre time of 33:47.2. It was a double gold day for Proudfoot as his victory helped the Gryphons achieve perhaps the most dominant performance in CIS history, setting the meet record for largest margin of victory and winning their ninth straight CIS title. Guelph finished with a total of 27 points, while Victoria finished second with 103 points.
With the win, Proudfoot was also named First-Team All-Canadian for the fifth time in his career. He joins former Gryphon Kyle Boorsma as the only cross-county runner to accomplish this feat and be a five-time CIS team champion.
Proudfoot was also named Pioneer Energy OUA Athlete of the Week for the period ending October 27th following his individual victory at the OUA Championships.
FEMALE: Jylisa Williams (Atlanta, GA) – 5th yr. – Lakehead Thunderwolves – Basketball
Going up against the No. 8 nationally-ranked Queen's Gaels, Thunderwolves shooting guard Jylisa Williams had herself a game that no Lakehead (or Queen's) fan will be forgetting any time soon.
Williams went off for 42 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists as the Thunderwolves upset the Gaels 82-76 in their season opener on Friday. She was also a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line.
The 42 points eclipsed her previous Lakehead record of 39 set last season and was just 7 points shy of former Brock Badger Candi Lohr's OUA record of 49.
Williams and the Thunderwolves were back on the court Saturday hosting the York Lions and the outcome was the same. She scored a game-high 25 points, along with eight rebounds and eight assists as Lakehead defeated York 62-46.
Lakehead is 2-0 to open the season and will travel to Hamilton this weekend to take on the McMaster Marauders.
