MALE: Philip Scrubb (Richmond, B.C.) – 5th yr – Carleton Ravens – Basketball
Playing in his final CIS championship, and with the opportunity to make history, Philip Scrubb did not disappoint, averaging a tournament-best 29.3 points in three games as the Carleton Ravens won a fifth-consecutive national title.
In doing so, Scrubb, along with his brother Thomas, became just the fourth and fifth men’s basketball players to win five national titles in their CIS careers.
Scrubb opened the tournament with 31 points in Carleton’s 90-50 win against the Saskatchewan Huskies, with 29 of the 31 coming in the game’s first half before he was rested for much of the third and fourth quarters.
He followed that performance with 29 points in Carleton’s 83-74 semifinals win against the Victoria Vikings, and 28 in the Ravens 93-46 rout of the No. 2-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees in a championship rematch from last year.
Along with his scoring prowess, Scrubb also led the tournament with 8.3 assists per game – including games of 13 and 10 assists against Victoria and Ottawa, respectively – and averaged 4.1 rebounds.
Scrubb was recognized for this performance with his second Jack Donohue Trophy as Final 8 MVP.
FEMALE: Kelly Campbell (St. Thomas, Ont.) – 4th yr – Western Mustangs – Hockey
It’s hard to put together a better three-game stretch than what Mustangs goaltender Kelly Campbell did in the CIS championship.
In three games, Campbell allowed just one goal and had a .989 save percentage as she led Western to its first national title in program history, and was named MVP of the tournament.
She opened the tournament allowing one goal on 28 shots in a 3-1 win against Moncton, and followed it with consecutive shutouts against the CIS No. 2 Montreal Carabins in the semifinals, and No. 1 McGill Martlets in the championship game.
Against the Carabins, the 2013 CIS champion, Campbell shut the door with 28 saves in a 2-0 win as Western advanced to the national championship game for the first time ever.
In the finals, she turned aside 38 McGill shots as Western cruised to a 5-0 victory against the defending national champions.
