Female Athlete of the Week – Sarah Hammond (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) – 4th Year – Guelph Gryphons
The performances keep getting better for Guelph Gryphons captain Sarah Hammond – one of the emerging track and field stars in U SPORTS – and her latest has earned her the nod as OUA Female Athlete of the Week.
The fourth-year applied human nutrition student has been dominant in the 60m hurdles throughout this OUA season and she reached a new level last weekend. Just one week after running the fastest time posted in Canada this season – 8.33 seconds for first place at the McGill Team Challenge – Hammond produced an even better result, with an incredible 8.22 at the York Open in Toronto. The result placed first ahead of Canadian Olympian Angela Whyte, the current women's 100m hurdles champion.
Hammond's breakthrough performance established a new University of Guelph record, was the fastest time run by any Canadian in U SPORTS, NCAA, or a post-collegiate/professional this year, and also marked the second-fastest time ever in Canadian collegiate history.
An OUA silver medalist in 2016 and a U SPORTS silver medalist in 2015, Hammond is the top-ranked U SPORTS hurdler in the country and the 8.22 finish puts her just 0.08 seconds off the World Indoor Championship standard.
