Willsey and Middaugh named Investors Group Athletes of the Week, powered by 2XU
BURLINGTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Investors Group Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by 2XU, for the period ending March 29, 2018.
Male Athlete of the Week – John Willsey (Orillia, Ont.) – 3rd Year – Waterloo Warriors
The Waterloo Warriors men’s curling rink made waves at the U SPORTS Curling Championship and this week’s OUA Male Athlete of the Week – John Willsey – played a significant part in the team’s fourth place finish on the national stage.
As a whole, the Warriors skip led the rink to five wins at the championship event, including a strong victory over eventual gold medalist Alberta, before ultimately bowing out in the bronze medal game at the hands of UNB. On a personal note, the third year curled his way to a Second Team All-Canadian nod after curling 80 percent for the championship.
Female Athlete of the Week – Kelly Middaugh (Victoria Harbour, Ont.) – 1st Year – Laurier Golden Hawks
The Golden Hawks women’s rink wasn’t able to soar to a national championship, but one of the true bright spots for Laurier at the U SPORTS Curling Championship was Kelly Middaugh, who earns this week’s OUA Female Athlete of the Week nod.
Middaugh was the top player at her position throughout the week as she earned U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian recognition. The Golden Hawks second curled 80 percent for the week and out-curled her opposition by at least five percent in five of Laurier's seven games. Outdoing her own lofty numbers, however, Middaugh saved her best for the championship’s top teams, curling 90 percent against TRU and 85 percent against Alberta, respectively.
