Kokko and Seeley named Investors Group Athletes of the Week, Powered by 2XU
BURLINGTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Investors Group Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by 2XU, for the period ending January 9, 2018.
Male Athlete of the Week – Tevaun Kokko (Markham, Ont.) – 2nd Year – Laurier Golden Hawks
Tevaun Kokko, a second year Arts major, was an unmistakable presence on the court this past weekend, helping the Golden Hawks go toe-to-toe with tough squads from both Western and Windsor.
Kokko scored a career-high 30 points off the bench against Windsor, as he shot 10-for-20 from the field and 6-for-10 from three-point range, alongside six rebounds and two assists. His efforts helped guide Laurier to a 98-91 win over the Lancers, snapping their five-game losing skid and pushing his team into a three-way tie for 4th in the OUA West.
When the purple and gold faced Western on Friday, meanwhile, Kokko secured 22 points (8-17 FG), three rebounds, and four assists in a last-second 78-76 loss to the Mustangs. His strong effort on the court has moved him into third in the OUA for scoring at 21.5 points per game.
Female Athlete of the Week – Rachel Seeley (Ottawa, Ont.) – 2nd Year – Ryerson Rams
Rachel Seeley had as close to the perfect start to a new year a goaltender could have, backstopping her Rams to a pair of wins over Windsor and Laurier this weekend.
En route to her helping her team secure five out of a possible six points, the second year goaltenders stopped all 22 shots she faced against Windsor in the 3-0 win. She would follow that up with another brick wall performance against Laurier, stopping all 21 shots against to shutout the Golden Hawks in a 1-0 shootout win.
The shutouts are the first two of Seeley's OUA career, and for her efforts, she saw her save percentage by rise by 10 points and now sits 10th in OUA in that category with a mark of 0.926.
