Gray and Stephan named Investors Group Athletes of the Week, Powered by 2XU
BURLINGTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Investors Group Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by 2XU, for the period ending January 16, 2018.
Male Athlete of the Week – Kadre Gray (Toronto, Ont.) – 2nd Year – Laurentian Voyageurs
For the third time this season, Laurentian’s Kadre Gray earns OUA Male Athlete of the Week honours.
Gray, a second year Health Promotion student, led the charge on back-to-back nights as the Voyageurs downed the #10 Ryerson Rams on Friday and the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday. Gray recorded his third triple-double of the season against the Rams, knocking down 26 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out 12 assists in an 88-83 win. On Saturday, Gray poured in 32 points while adding six rebounds and seven assists to his stat line as the Voyageurs downed the Varsity Blues 101-82.
After another pair of impressive outings, Gray continues to sit atop the OUA with 26.5 PPG and 6.5 APG, leading the No. 7 Voyageurs to a now 12-1 record on the year.
Female Athlete of the Week – Kara Stephan (Barrie, Ont.) – 3rd Year – RMC Paladins
Thanks to a record-setting weekend, RMC’s Kara Stephan is the OUA Female Athlete of the Week.
After an impressive start to 2018, Stephan is now leading the OUA in kills, points, and service aces. After a combined 37 kills last weekend, the native of Barrie, Ont. burst into the triple digits, now sitting atop the league with 130 kills on the season. Additionally, with five and three aces, respectively, in RMC's games against Nipissing and York, Stephan increased her lead in the OUA service aces category as well, bringing her season total to an even 30.
The third-year student athlete set new career highs in kills and points in the Paladins Saturday game against Nipissing, with 26 and 33.5 respectively. The 26 kills also set a new school record for most kills in a match in RMC women's volleyball. Stephan's 13 digs in the match were also a game-high, as were her 11 kills against York.
