MALE: Trevor Morbeck (Jackson, WI) – 3rd yr – Guelph Gryphons – Hockey
Guelph forward Trevor Morbeck (Jackson, WI) has been named Investors Group OUA Male Athlete of the Week after he led the Gryphons to a pair of victories last week.
On Thursday night at the Gryphons inaugural "Aggies Night" game, Morbreck, a third-year food, agricultural & resource econ major, recorded his first career hat-trick in a 6-3 win over the visiting University of Toronto Varsity Blues. After a pair of second period power play goals gave the Gryphons a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes, the Jackson, WI native scored his third of the night midway through the final frame.
In the second game of their home and home series with the Blues, the 6’2”, 207 lbs forward recorded a goal and an assist as the Grpyhons swept their two-game regular season series with the Blues following a 5-2 victory.
Morbeck and the Gryphons will now shift their focus to a Thursday night tilt with the rival Laurier Golden Hawks in the 8th annual “Frosty Mug” game.
FEMALE: Kaley Tienhaara (Thunder Bay, Ont.) – 3rd yr. – Nipissing Lakers – Hockey
Kaley Tienhaara (Thunder Bay, Ont.) has been named the Investors Group OUA Female Athlete of the Week after she recorded five points in two games as the Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team picked up a pair of big road wins.
On Saturday against the Windsor Lancers, Tienhaara, a third-year BPHE major, scored a goal and added an assist to help lead the Lakers to their 11th win of the season. The 4-2 victory snapped a mini two game losing streak for the No. 8 ranked Lakers as they look to keep pace in the playoff race.
The Thunder Bay, Ont. native followed that up on Sunday as she scored all three Lakers goals as Nipissing beat the Western Mustangs 3-1. With the win, Tienhaara and the Lakers completed a sweep of their season two-game series with the Mustangs.
After a long road trip, Tienhaar and the Lakers will look to extend their winning streak to three games as they will host the visiting Ryerson Rams on Friday night at the Memorial Gardens.
