Laurentian second Sara Guy (Wahnapitae, ON) has been named the Investors Group OUA Female Athlete of the Week after leading the Voyageurs to their first conference title in program history this past weekend.
At the 2017 OUA Curling Championship, Guy, a first-year nursing student-athlete, led Laurentian to a 5-2 record in the round robin and a berth in the playoffs. After advancing past the Queen’s Gaels 7-6 in the quarter-finals, Guy and the Voyageurs cruised into the finals with a 8-1 victory over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
Taking on the Rams in the final, Laurentian opened with a deuce before Ryerson answered with two points of their own in the third end. Before the break, the Voyageurs extended their lead to 5-2. Both teams traded single points over the next three ends before Laurentian ran the Rams out of rocks in the eighth end for a 6-4 victory.
As a result of her strong play, the Wahnapitae, ON native was also named an OUA first-team all-star.
Next up, Guy and the Voyageurs will head north from Sudbury to Thunder Bay, Ont. for the 2017 U SPORTS-Curling Canada University Championships, hosted by the Lakehead Thunderwolves, from March 18-22 at the Fort William Curling Club.
