Golden Hawks skip Matt Hall (Kitchener, Ont.) has been recognized with Investors Group OUA Male Athlete of the Week honours after he helped his hometown team capture their third consecutive OUA Men’s Curling Championship on Monday.
Hall, a second-year, fin. math major, led Laurier to a perfect 10-0 record this past weekend, including a pair of game-winning draws in elimination games. In the quarter-finals against the Carleton Ravens, the Kitchener, Ont. native he drew to the button in a 6-5 Laurier win.
However, his biggest shot of the championship came in the gold medal game as with Queen’s sitting three, Hall once again drew to the button to earn a 5-3 win for Wilfrid Laurier.
With their championship sweep, the Hawks have now won 22 consecutive games at the conference championship and became just the third team in OUA history to win three straight curling championships.
Hall and the Golden Hawks will now fly south as they’ll head to Thunder Bay, Ont. for the upcoming 2017 U SPORTS-Curling Canada University Championships, hosted by the Lakehead Thunderwolves, from March 18-22 at the Fort William Curling Club.
