BURLINGTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending March 7th, 2016.
FEMALE: Alina Dormann (Ottawa, Ont.) – 1st yr. – Toronto Varsity Blues – Volleyball
As far as debut seasons go, University of Toronto Varsity Blues right side hitter Alina Dormann (Ottawa, Ont.) had one of the best.
After being named OUA East Division Player of the Year earlier in the week, Dormann and the No. 2 ranked Varsity Blues captured their second straight OUA championship this past weekend on their home court at the Goldring Centre.
In the semifinals against McMaster on Friday night, the first-year life science student-athlete led all players with 20 points, tallying 19 kills and one block, while also adding 17 digs. Dormann was named Player of the Game as the Blues defeated the Marauders.
On Saturday in the gold medal match, the Ottawa, Ont. native had a game-high 13 points on eight kills and five aces and also added seven digs as Toronto prevailed in the battle of Toronto over the crosstown rival Ryerson Rams in straight sets.
Dormann and the Varsity Blues will now turn their focus to the CIS championship where they will represent OUA next weekend in the tournament at Brandon University.
MALE: Alex Campbell (Brampton, Ont.) – 5th yr – Windsor Lancers – Basketball
The Windsor Lancers are off to the OUA Wilson Cup Final Four for a fourth consecutive season thanks in large part to a monster weekend from veteran Alex Campbell (Brampton, Ont.).
On Wednesday night in the opening round of the playoffs, the fifth-year graduate studies student-athlete scored just under 50 percent of the Lancers total points in a 82-73 victory over the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs. The Brampton, Ont. native scored 13 of the Lancers’ 18 first quarter points and finished the game with 37 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and a block in 38 minutes of action.
For an encore, the 6-foot-2, 200 lbs guard led the Lancers into McMaster’s Burridge Gymnasium where Windsor upset the No. 5 ranked Marauders 79-78. Campbell, who played all 40 minutes, finished with a game high 33 points, five rebounds, three steals and a block.
Over the course of both playoff games last week, Campbell had 70 points, 15 rebounds, 7 steals and 2 blocks, playing in all but three minutes in those two games.
Campbell and the Lancers hope that history is on their side as they will now travel to Ryerson on Friday night to take on the No. 1 seeded Rams in the semifinals. The Lancers, who handed Ryerson one of their two losses earlier this season, knocked off the No. 1 seeded University of Ottawa Gee-Gees in last year’s semifinal matchup.
