Pingue-Giles, Wood named OUA Athletes of the Week

FEMALE: Keneca Pingue-Giles (Winnipeg, Man.) – 5th yr. – Ryerson Rams – Basketball
What a week it was for Ryerson Rams guard Keneca Pingue-Giles (Winnipeg, Man.).
After winning the Critelli Cup last Saturday night, the fifth-year master's student-athlete was named the CIS Player of the Year prior to the start of the national championship becoming the first female from Ryerson to capture the honour in any sport.
On Thursday night against Regina, the Winnipeg, Man. native had a game high 29 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals in 33 minutes of action as the Rams defeated the Cougars 73- 70.
Pingue-Giles followed that up on Saturday in the semifinals with a team high 20 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals as Ryerson upset the No. 1 seeded McGill Martlets 87-72.
In the final on Sunday afternoon, the 5-foot-7 guard once again had a game high 26 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, however, it wasn’t enough as the Rams fell to the Saskatchewan Huskies 85-71.
At the CIS Final 8 national championship, Pingue-Giles averaged 25.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.7 steals per game which earned her CIS tournament all-star honours.
Led by Pingue-Giles, the Rams reached the national final and won a CIS silver medal for the first in school history.

Connor Wood (Guelph, Ont.) and the high flying Carleton Ravens soared to their sixth consecutive CIS men’s basketball title this past weekend.
The fourth-year economics major got things started on Thursday night with 18 points and seven rebounds to go along with shooting 5-for-13 from beyond the arc in a 91-75 quarterfinal win over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack.
On Saturday against Dalhousie, the Guelph, Ont. native was up to his old tricks as he had 18 points for a second consecutive game. Wood also recorded four rebounds, three assists and a steal as the Ravens downed the Tigers 76-66.
Wood saved his best performance for last as in the gold medal game, the 6-foot-4, 200 lbs guard had 22 points, four rebounds, and four assists in Carleton’s 101-79 victory over the Calgary Dinos.
For his efforts, Wood was named Player of the Game and awarded the Jack Donohue Trophy as Tournament MVP.
