BURLINGTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending December 7th, 2015.
FEMALE: Olivia Di Bacco (Orillia, Ont.) – 5th yr. – Brock Badgers – Wrestling
Brock Badgers wrestler Olivia Di Bacco (Orillia, Ont.) has been named OUA Athlete of the Week after a strong showing at the Canadian Wrestling Team Trials this past weekend.
Di Bacco, a fifth-year kinesiology student-athlete, knocked off former world silver medalist Staci Anaka 2-1 at 69kg, before losing to Leah Ferguson by pinfall in the semifinals.
The Orillia, Ont. native hopes to lead Brock to their seventh OUA title in the past eight years later this season.
Di Bacco and the No. 1 nationally ranked Badgers will also look to hoist the CIS banner for a fifth consecutive season when they host the national championship for the first time in 10 years.
MALE: Mike Moffat (Waterloo, Ont.) – 2nd yr – Waterloo Warriors – Hockey
The Waterloo Warriors enter the holiday break on a four game winning streak, with their most recent victory coming thanks to the performance of defenceman Mike Moffat (Waterloo, Ont.).
With the team missing their leading scorer, Moffat scored a natural hat trick, the first of his OUA career, and added an assist for a four point night as the Warriors defeated the rival Western Mustangs 6-5.
Trailing 2-1 midway through the first period, the second-year kinesiology student-athlete tied the game at 9:58 on the powerplay. The Waterloo, Ont. native would score another on the man advantage to give the hometown team a 3-2 lead in the final minutes of the period. Moffat, a 6-foot-1 240 lbs defenceman, would help the Warriors stretch their lead to 4-2 with his third consecutive goal of the game midway through the second period.
With under a minute remaining in the game and the score tied 5-5, Moffat, along with Stephen Silas, set up Andrew Smith for the game winning goal at 19:32 of the third period.
Moffat and the Warriors will now enjoy a break for the holidays before returning to the ice on Jan. 8 when they travel to Toronto, Ont. to take on the Ryerson Rams at the Mattamy Athletic Centre Arena.
